Reverse shoulder replacement - July 2024
I had a perfect experience with Dr. Metcalf and his office and felt fully informed throughout. After our first visit, Dr. Metcalf gave me very specific feedback on why he recommended reverse shoulder replacement for me. The shoulder surgery information packet is outstanding. You can tell Dr. Metcalf has performed 16,000 shoulder replacements because of the detailed instructions and requirements. Follow every single instruction, including renting an ice compression machine, which is essential to pain relief. The surgery itself was incredibly professional from start to finish. The nurse, anesthesiologist, and other medical staff at the center made me feel safe and calm. Dr. Metcalf did an unbelievable job on the surgery as evidenced by the beautiful closure. And I am healing ahead of expectations. Before and after surgery, I was able to call and email with questions and this made the difference for me. I might have been upset if I wasn't sure

Fantastic Outcome-Twice
After several years of advising against surgery, Dr. Metcalf finally agreed that surgery was the best option. He repaired a complete tear of my right labrum. Not only was the repair perfect, but he cleaned up the arthritis and my shoulder has been pain free ever since, and felt better than it did when I was thirty. Two years later I needed rotator cuff (and upper bicep reattachment) repair on my left shoulder. Again, Dr. Metcalf did a fantastic job. I could not have been happier with the procedure. I really appreciated the fact that Dr. Metcalf didn't sugar coat anything. Rather, he's very candid, direct, and the most competent shoulder surgeon there is. He's the ONLY surgeon I trust and highly recommend him to everyone I know who needs shoulder surgery.Mark LazarCottonwood Heights, UT

Left shoulder normal replacement.
Shoulder replaced about 10 months ago. Everything was well explained about procedure and rehab. After 3 months had almost full range of motion. Improving dexterity and strengthening is on going. Pain management was minimal. Key to success 1. Qualified surgeon. 2. follow rehab and PT instructions. Don't do too much too soon. Would highly recommend Dr. Metcalf and his staff. Need right one fixed also. I am 71 years and would have no else but Dr Metcalf perform procedure. Right shoulder has to be a reverse procedure.

Unnecessary surgery
Dr Metcalf performed shoulder joint replacement surgery on me in 2017 after a skiing accident. Another orthopedic surgeon in my hometown reviewed the X-rays layer and concluded that surgery was completely unnecessary. I have dealt with 3 more surgeries and years of physical therapy as a result. I can no longer golf or do yoga because of limited mobility in that shoulder. I cannot raise my and arm above shoulder height. My other surgeon claims that I would be 100% if Dr Metcalf had never touched my arm and just let my arm heal in a sling. This surgery forever changed my life. Beware of this doctor and get a second opinion.

Dr. Metcalf was friendly and personable. I got the sense from him that he is very confident in what he does. He discussed with me the options for my shoulder and together we decided on a plan. In the end I chose surgery. Dr. Metcalf told me the results I could expect and those results are exactly what I got. Recovery from shoulder surgery is not easy. But, if you follow his after care recovery plan, put in the work at physical therapy, and go into it with realistic expectations, you too will have a good result. I will eventually need my other shoulder repaired and I will go back to him for that.

If I could leave a zero star review for Metcalf, I would. If you enjoy pain and a poor outcome, see Metcalf. I had a shoulder replacement done by Metcalf. He said I would be healed in 9 months or less. At my follow up appointments, I complained that something was "mechanically" wrong with my implant and I was in terrible pain. Metcalf repeatedly said I was fine and did no further tests to discover why I was in so much pain. He either didn't believe me or didn't care. I wasn't asking for a

I am very happy with the repairs Dr. Metcalf made to both of my shoulders. The proof is in the end result and I am healing and recovering my strength and flexibility in the time he told me it would take.

Dr. Metcalf was very welcoming and personable. For me that is important. I like to talk to someone who I feel is on the same level as I am. He knew what he was talking about and first advised me that I should try physical therapy first and give it a chance before going to surgery. I liked that as well. He wasn't all about surgery. He was trying to make the right choices for me. I did wind up having surgery and it went very well. I am very pleased with my experience with Dr. Metcalf & Staff.

They just don't come any better than Dr. Metcalf. I have been a patient for many years. He did both of my rotator cuffs and I did very well. He is such a kind, caring Dr. and I was so fortunate he was able to see me. Because he is so good, so competent and so professional he's a busy doctor and difficult to get an appointment.

Surgery on my shoulder today. I was very impressed with Dr. Metcalf's quality of care, bedside manner and patient needs. Personality plus with NO sign of "Doctor ego"..You can't go wrong by choosing this doc to work on you. Here is a bonus I have NEVER experienced. He personally call my wife while I was in recovery. to inform her, in detail how things went. Trust factor 5-stars. Same for the "Tosh" nursing staff. Over the top helpful with my needs.

Dr. Metcalf is an extraordinary shoulder surgeon. He is confident, focused, meticulous, caring and encouraging. His vast knowledge and experience with shoulders equips him to make decisions in the best interest of the patient. After he performed a complicated reverse total shoulder replacement on me, the pain free range of motion and strength I've recovered is remarkable. His long time, competent, knowledgeable, and eager to help assistant, Woody Pearmain, sweetens the deal.

I lived with shoulder pain for two decades. December 2011I realized I must seek a surgical solution. I Researched the surgeons in the Salt Lake area thoroughly. After speaking to many health care professionals (Other Doctors, Nurses ect.) I came to the conclusion that Dr Metcalf was at the top of everyones list of best surgeons. Dr Metcalf repaired my right shoulder, and two years later my left shoulder. The outcome of both surgeries has been excellent!
