Left me searching for what was wrong for years
I met Dr. Coan in my early thirties with chronic pain in my back and joints. He quickly dismissed my pain symptoms after a 2 minute examination and said there's nothing he could do for me and referred me to a pain management doctor. No further testing, no recommendation beyond that. 3 years later, I was diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis. I'm glad I advocated for my own health with other doctors and found someone who had an ounce of compassion and a determination to find the source of the pain. Not all doctors are bad, but some of them should have their pedestal revoked.

Highly recommend Dr. Coan and Arthritis Northwest!
I would recommend Dr. Coan to anyone needing care for rheumatological conditions. He is kind, and compassionate, and will always take the time to listen to your concerns. He makes time for his patients never making you feel like you are being rushed out the door. He will do his best to answer questions, go over test results in detail, and explain medication and treatment options. The MAs, office staff and everyone I have interacted with at Arthritis Northwest are kind, attentive, and professional. Occasionally I see ARNP Penny Sather and she is wonderful as well! I highly recommend Dr. Coan and Arthritis Northwest!

Find someone else if you are able.
I saw Dr. Coan for nearly 3 years, mainly due to the lack of options here in Spokane. He was incredibly dismissive of many of my symptoms. Shrugged them off, laughed and called them 'weird' before simply moving on, blamed many on my age (in my early 40's) and treated me only as a set of numbers to be looked at and not a real person. He is incredibly arrogant, despite (as I realize now) knowing next to nothing about Sjogren's. If you have this condition, or suspect you have it, look elsewhere for help. Dr. Coan treats this disease as only a 'nuisance' condition of dry eye & dry mouth which it most certainly is not, as confirmed both by the new rheumatologist and neurologist that I now see, who have indeed confirmed that my symptoms are not 'weird,' nor were they monitored or managed properly by Dr. Coan. I truly don't understand how this man is allowed to practice as a rheumatologist, or claim to be a specialist in this field.

It was a very perfunctory examination by Dr. Coen who had not seen my chart before he came in. He looked at some past blood test results, (on my phone because the office only had my most basic records that my GP sent!!!) and concluded that I have osteoarthritis, (I know this) and that’s all. His assessment of my hyper-mobility was incomplete and showed a rudimentary understanding of the basic test he didn’t even finish. He spent very little time in the room with me and didn’t listen to my experience or concerns. It was very disappointing.

Dr Coan plays games
I’ve been working in healthcare for 30 yrs and understand the challenges of patient care. Dr Coan and his office play ridiculous games with medication refills. I am a stable Lupus patient and I need labs done once yearly (summer)and an eye exam yearly as well (I do in spring). Even with a routine, Dr Coan won’t extend refills after being seen, or after eye exams. The pharmacy calls the office, the office doesn’t respond back, I then need to access the online portal to ask what is going on, and three days later they claim I need additional labs. By this time, I am out of medications and need to drive in (after being there just 4 months prior) for blood work. This wastes my time, pharmacists, the MA and office staff need to run around to figure out why the Doc is holding up the process. Stable labs, stable field of vision exams, WHY HOLD UP PATIENT CARE? Dr Gary Craig NEVER did that! I scheduled a telehealth visit and I got on call, waited 30 minutes, and no one showed on their end.

It has been over 2 years since a visit with Dr Coan for my son, but we were so grateful for him. It took almost a year between our first visit and a diagnosis but when we came to see him the second time he had changed practices (was now in Spokane). After over a year of seeing so many doctors, the exact blood work repeatedly done with no answers and watching my son become more miserable by the minute, finally getting an answer and a plan of treatment was a God send. I was so incredibly impressed after months between visits (and changing locations) that he came in and without reading charts remembered my sons case. It was refreshing and as a mother I was emotional and so grateful, someone finally listened and helped.

Faulsely accuses patients of failing to follow his unachievable and unfocused treatment plan. Would order labs and procedures like endoscopes without any assistance as to where to get the bloodwork drawn and analyzed or helping to find a service that would do the endoscopy. He constantly made negative personal remarks towards me that were none medical. He was very unkind and seemed uninterested in figuring out a treatment plan that worked for me. The drug he ordered cost me out-of-pocket $650.00 for a 1 month supply and caused severe gastrointestinal issues after 2 weeks. Coan then got mad when I discontinued the drug and refused to believe his off-label treatment drug made me really sick. My joint pain, severe inflammation flares, and joint damage are untreated and continue to worsen. This physician is very discouraging, personally critical and demeaning, and uncaring. He will not take the time to figure the actual correct when labs incongruent with physical symptoms.0 stars

I saw him awhile ago but he was by far one of my favorite doctors. He was unable to help me due to my problems not being what he treats, but he listened and was very caring. One of the first doctors to not treat me like I was crazy. I wish I could have remained a patient of his.

I very much enjoyed my visit with Dr. Coen. I had previously been with another provider who recently retired and this was my first visit with a new doctor. He was thorough in his examination. He was personable and put me totally at ease. It was easy to ask him questions. He was attentive, answered questions with ease, and he assured me as to my continuing treatment. I look forward to a long relationship with him!

my only complaint about dr coan is that neither healthgrades nor arthritis northwest are up to date on dr coans information, this is the third time i'm leaving a review, (the last two were deleted before i could finish, and i couldn't find them). dr coan has been treating me for an auto-immune disease that was diagnosed in 2009, when he was at rockwood clinic in spokane. when he moved his practice to coeur d'alane i continue to have him treat me until i stopped seeing him due to the rudeness of his office staff. i was thrilled when i heard he was coming back to spokane. i had to wait for 3 months to get an appointment but it was worth it to have a dr that is familiar with my history and that you don't have to EXPLAIN EVERYTHING from the beginning each time you see him. dr coan is very knowledgeable with current and new treatments and testing and i hope he continues to practice in spokane for a very long time so i won't have to find a new dr. DR. COAN, YOU ROCK!!!!!

Dr Coan is very knowledgeable, but appears to have difficulty explaining things. He must be pushed for answers. Seems very unconcerned. I feel he does not offer the close follow up that most patients feel is needed or warranted. Most likely because he is very busy, appointments are hard to get. His demeanor is cool and a bit off putting. Patients want answers today, not 6 months from now. We don’t want to “wait and see” how things play out. If you want better, chose someone else.

After waiting 3 months to get in Dr Coan was quite rude and before even looking at my test results mentioned he probably wouldn't be treating me long term even though my test came back positive for Lupus. And then made a followup appointment for another 8 weeks out - nearly 6 months without any kind of treatment. He was cold and unfeeling and unkind, and treated me poorly. I am 67 and in bad health so I find his behavior shocking. I would never recommend him to anyone that needs any kind of help
