Dr. Matthew Varacallo, MD

I started seeing Matt in 2022 regarding hip replacement. I had my right total hip replacement done in Oct 2023. The left hip was completed Sept 2024. Thanks to Matt and his staff, I now have my quality of life restored. I'm walking and moving, pain-free for the first time in 10 years. Both procedures were completed without infection or follow-up pain. I'm so thankful for his skill. God Bless him. I HIGHLY recommend him for joint replacement surgery.

My son is a high school athlete who unfortunately tore his ACL during a game. We are from out of state and initially went to a surgeon local to us and didn’t give us the answer we were looking for. As a mom, I could not accept that my son may not ever be able to play again. I searched the praying for a miracle for my son. I found Dr. Varacallo and read all of these reviews and knew that I found the best doctor for my son. Fast forward to the recovery etc. WOW is just the beginning. After surgery we of course had to do the ACL protocol and with my son’s determination and Dr. Varacallo’s excellent work, my son is able to play again. I can not thank him and his staff enough for being the miracle we needed. Worth every single mile drive and would do it over again. Absolutely will recommend him to everyone we know!

This protocol for student athletes is absolutely ridiculous. My daughter had surgery in September and they won't sign off on her to play rec soccer. She's has been doing PT since August before surgery and surgery was in September. We've spent hours doing functionality testing and it seems like all they care about is bragging about people who travel from out of state, etc for their program. We just want her to be able to play high school soccer. She isn't going to college for soccer and just wants to enjoy her senior year.

Doctor Varacallo is such a talented, competent doctor. I felt that I was in very expert hands during my hip replacement surgery, but I was also impressed with his kind, compassionate nature. Doctor Varacallo has been very encouraging and supportive towards me, and I was grateful to be in his care. He really gave me a new life, for which I will be forever thankful.

Did a lousy job and never heard from him since the surgery.

Dr Varacallo discussed in detail the steps I needed to take to become an ideal candidate for my knee replacement. With his guidance I was able to quit smoking for good and lose about 20lbs. The surgical experience was worth the wait and my efforts. I took one pain pill the day after my surgery and have not felt the need to since. I am finally able to walk without pain and have even been able to participate in my grandkids’ playground activities. I respect Dr Varacallo and his team and am beyond thankful for my experience. I would strongly recommend this surgeon to anyone. Five stars!!

My elderly mother experienced severe pain with her knee. Dr. Varacallo did not listen to my mother's complaints nor did he spend time explaining the situation. The staff was friendly but that dosent make up for his rude attitude. He was in the room was for only 7 minutes and said her situation was "complex". I would not recommend him to anyone.

Dr. Varacallo replaced both of my knees last year. Both surgeries went well, recovery was great and I'm walking without pain for the first time in 12 years!! He takes his time with his patients, I never feel rushed. He truly cares about his patients and their outcome. He's busy, but well worth the wait! I'm glad I chose him to do my surgeries!

Matt is a caring ,competent Dr. Takes time to answer any questions or explain something He corrected an issue on my knee which was previously replaced by a different Dr. I used a walker one day and a cane 3 days then was walking on my own. With hard and consistent exercises by myself and pt I was done with pt in 8 weeks thanks Dr varacallo for doing great job on my knee

Dr Matthew Varacallo is just absolutely stellar. He spends time explaining conditions to patients and his technical skillset is beyond elite— he is a rare find for this area. His office is always tremendously busy. He is WORTH THE WAIT. I tell everyone about him — I have been treated by orthopedic surgeons in Florida , California, Arizona, Ohio, and West Virginia because I travel/move a lot for work. I recently moved to Pennsylvania and Dr Varacallo had to revise my knee (making it my 4th surgery on that knee) and I am now a year out and have ZERO issues for the first time in 15 years!! Thank you so much to him and his staff and I would recommend him to anyone !

Dr. Varacallo is the finest orthopedic surgeon. He did a total knee replacement of my knee and the whole experience was like a text book. Pain management was just right, physical therapy was provided by the best, and post operative meetings were satisfying. I would highly recommend Dr. Varacallo for orthopedic work

Dr. Matthew Varacallo is a miracle worker! I saw orthopedic surgeons in Pittsburgh, state college, and harrisburg. He is the only one who could fix my issues with my shoulder. Since the surgery/recovery I have not had ANY problems -- it has been 5-6 years since my shoulder was "normal". He is AMAZING!

The best sports medicine surgeon in the state! We went to Pittsburgh (UPMC) and state college but sought Dr. Matthew Varacallo as a second opinion from about 2 hours away. He operated on my knee and after surgery/rehab my knee was stronger than before it was injured. I set a school record in football the following season. Can't thank him enough!!

I can't say enough about Dr. Matthew Varacallo! I could rave about him for paragraphs!! He is a top 65 total joint replacement surgeon in America for a reason! He is an amazing orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine surgery specialist that can do it all! Dr Varacallo is great!! My total knee replacement went very well. His skill, knowledge and caring bedside manner make him an excellent surgeon and his staff is also top notch!! I’m so glad I had my surgery done by Dr Matt and I have no doubt if I ever have the need for orthopedic surgery again he will definitely be my first choice..We are very fortunate to have him as a surgeon at Penn Highlands/DuBois.

I was referred to Dr Matthew Varacallo because I had been having issues with my knee for almost a year. I live 2-3 hours away from DuBois. I have never met a surgeon with such tremendous bedside manner — his ability to explain my injury/condition , in addition to actually being able to fix the problem , was tremendous — he is a rare find! A surgeon with not only an amazing bedside manner but surgically he has excellent technical skills as well. Dr. Matt Varacallo recently did my joint replacement and I have had NO PAIN since I woke up and recovered from surgery. I was driving within a week. I was off a cane by 3 days. I am back to all of the things I want to do and I have no pain. I recovered MUCH FASTER than I did when I had my other total knee replacement done in state college with UOC!
