Best of the best
I was referred to Dr Urken by an upstate ENT physician who claimed Urken was best certified for procedures to remove a squamous cell lesion from my soft palate. I had already had surgery and radiation to remove an SCC lesion from my tonsil 3 years before.Found the doctor to be very knowledgeable, thorough and confident about the 16 hour surgery session, ( 5 different surgeries to accomplish goal). This was an extremely complex procedure involving my inner mouth, carotid artery in my neck, wrist in two locations along inner lower arm and grafts from my thigh.Dr Urken and his team were absolutely terrific, attentive and very reassuring. I progressed well and healed quickly. Only complaint was excessive pain poorly handled by an anti-opioid nurse at Mt. Sinai.

Amazing, Caring, Kind Expert in his Field
From booking the appointment to the front desk, the lovely tech, nurse and especially Dr. Urken …. my first visit as a new patient was amazing! . I was greeted with warmth, concern and excellent care from everyone I saw.. I have worked in healthcare for over 35 years and Dr. Urken is one of the most knowledgeable and kind Physicians I have ever had the pleasure of dealing with. He explained things clearly, gave me background on Thyroid Nodules and has a wonderful bed side manner. I have absolute trust in him and his office and feel safe and comforted to continue my care with him.

While Dr. Urken is very good, his office is run very poorly. I have had three MRIs and each time had to chase the office staff for weeks to have the MRIs read and interpreted, let alone get the doctor or his staff to call and deliver results. Luckily, it was determined that i don't have cancer. However, it would be much more upsetting to be truly ill and have to call and email his office multiple times as i have had to do since being his patient. Frankly, he and his staff should be ashamed at how they handle patients - or at least, this patient.

Dr Urken
If I could give Dr Urken 100 stars, I would. Not only is he an excellent surgeon, but he is very caring and responsive. What well known NYC doctor calls twice on a Sunday to see how you are? I always felt comfortable that I was in excellent hands. My feelings were mirrored by Dr Urken's excellent and available staff. In addition to the fact that each specialist was knowledgeable and supportive, it was very apparent that they not only highly respected Dr Urken, but really liked him! I felt that I was cared for by a cohesive, compassionate and highly skilled team. Ignore any negative reviews. I am very careful about my health and come from a family of doctors and this is the first time I have ever written a review for a doctor. I'll end with - go to Dr. Urken!

We are sure the doctor is excellent he seemed excellent however no one has called us since the CT scan and it’s been two weeks and we know it’s cancer. How comforting to know your doctors office is incompetent and follow through

Dr. Urken lacks empathy.
Dr. Urken performed two surgeries on me and even though he is a skilled surgeon he has no bedside manner. He actually shows annoyance at being asked..."how did it go"? I left the hospital with no information on how I was supposed to live. I looked deformed and was released without the knowledge of how to eat or drink. The staff in the NYC office never pick up the phone and when you do speak with someone they act like your annoying them.

Outstanding Team
We thank God every day that we were able to see Dr. Urken, Dr. Buchbinder and Dr. Okay. Without this team, my husband was is disrepair from various failed surgeries in Albany. It's been 2 years since this horror show started but we are now happy to say this team has been beyond incredible and we see the light and life again. There aren't enough words to describe our gratitude. Much love.

Terrible experience. Waited over 2 hours- waiting room was full and Covid precautions were not followed, not enough space, etc. We had to wait in the hallway and were only seen after complaining , and then the doctor rushed in and did not discuss or explain anything just had some tests ordered. A total waste of our time. The whole office feels dirty and unorganized. There is no respect for the patient's time and once they have you in the back they want to make sure they can bill your insurance but you are still waiting again.

BEWARE!! For me, Dr. Urken has been my worst nightmare! I was a perfectly happy woman until April 25, 2019 when I had hemithyroid surgery. Luckily, it was not cancer, but since that day I have been miserable. My neck pain has been chronic ever since. I feel like someone is strangling me, lump in the throat, pressure, tightness, breathing and swallowing issues and a compromise of all neck muscles. Due to this botched surgery, I have had to seek other physicians for some answers as to how this happened from a simple thyroid surgery. Dr. Urken knows what happened on that day, but dismissed me and allowed his PA to say that the body is never the same again after surgery!! Poor or NO answers were given to me. I DONOT believe that Dr. Urken did my surgery. I believe it was his resident, or he simply had a bad day. Be careful if he was recommended to you as he was to me. Physicians should live by a code of ethics and truly care about the impact they have on a life!! In this case, MY life!!

I came to Dr.Urken to get my thyroid removed due to cancer. Dr. Urken gave very clear instructions on the pre-op prep, and then, most importantly, did an outstanding job on the surgery. The thyroid was removed without complications. I was concerned that my vocal cords could be damaged by the surgery, but that did not happen. I would highly recommend Dr. Urken.

Was recommended to Dr Urken by a family Endocrinologist after explaining my biopsy results. Scheduled an appointment with Dr Urken in NYC. He took his time explaining my condition and provided me with my options. I elected to have surgery in late Feb 2017. He successfully removed my left thyroid as a ambulatory patient at Beth Israel hospital. I had minimal pain after surgery and my scare is barely visible! Dr Urken expects a full recovery. Dr Urken is a caring and compassionate person/surgeon!

Dr. Urken is a fabulous surgeon who performed my complicated thyroid surgery. My recovery was remarkable, no side effects, and I was feeling fine and off meds within a week and one half. Because of my unusual condition, I had been to many doctors in NYC before choosing Dr. Urken. Thrilled that I chose him.

Waited over 1 an hr to see Dr. He apologized for wait, but then took a call. I am a 17 year survivor. Had head and neck radiation. Need to be followed as a result. Once he saw I didn't currently hv cancer he couldn't be bothered with me. I asked him if he wld examine my ears. He said he had patients who had Cancer. I am a 2 time Cancer Survivor. I get everything re: having cancer, being a survivor & LATE side effects. Dr. Urken was the worst Dr. Not thorough. Didn't even try to connect.

I've been to many doctors in my time for many different issues. Dr. Mark Urken is by far the most intelligent, skillful and I believe that he has a sixth sense that no other person I know possesses. I'm so privileged to have Dr. Urken in my life. He saved my life so far on two occasions and I'm forever grateful. Frank Brooklyn
