Probably excellent physician w/ off-putting humor
I agree with those who talk about Dr. Doherty's bedside manner. His sense of humor is derogatory. I can handle it, as mine sometimes is, too; but he comes across as arrogant or condescending. In my case, having a really good doctor is more important, as I can handle the personal stuff; and I don't doubt from what others have written that he is very competent. I haven't had to have him do much, so I can't say much about that from experience, but I continue going to him because I've had skin cancer, and he appears to be highly rated in that area. Just letting people know what to expect in the bedside manner is important to you.

Very thorough in plain language
Dr. Doherty is outstanding at helping to relax and at explaining condition & procedures in layman's terms. I also liked his quirky sense of humor (I can relate), part of his method for help putting me at ease. I'll go back, and refer friends.

Dr Doherty could very well be a good surgeon. I opted to go with another surgeon and I couldn’t be happier with my choice. Dr Doherty’s sense of humor rubbed me the wrong way immediately, I did not find him funny but more offensive to me. If you’re a person that has serious fear issues, he’s not your guy. I felt more belittled upon leaving then entering. He has zero tolerance, time or patience for a patient who has severe fear issues her whole life. I’m 63 but a big fearful baby. I’m not a one size fits all patient. He definitely made me feel as if he couldn’t deal with a person like me. Sue, his nurse, is absolutely fabulous!!!!!! My review isn’t to bash Dr Doherty, it’s simply to let folks with severe fear issues know. If any doctor makes you feel more scared and more embarrassed then you already feel, go with your heart and GUT, and find a new doc like I did and I’m so happy I did. Onto the next surgeon to remove cancer from my nose. ??

Dr. Doherty took a very large skin cancer off of my head. Not only did he do a great job of removal he also I did a great job of reconstruction. This is hands-down the best medical office I have ever attended anywhere. The front end is organized, pleasant and efficient. The nurses and Dr. Doherty are obviously a caring team. The whole organization runs like clockwork. From the very first visit to the last follow up you know that you are being cared for by a team that cares. The humor between the team is so good that I told my wife I almost look forward to going back even if I didn’t need to. I cannot imagine being in better hands anywhere and especially Bellingham.

Dr. Doherty was insulting when he first saw me in the exam room. He made a disgusting sound because I was a large woman, I lost confidence in him at that moment. Doctors need to see a patient for their needs, not to be judgmental. I left and realized if he is going to see me and judge me then he does not have my best interest at heart and I found a better doctor that was compassionate and kinder. He should be ready to serve the needs of a patient and not judge. I went on to lose weight and joined in the medical profession and I had a lot of larger patients and never once did I ever see them any differently then a patient that was to thin or what people would judge as NORMAL weight whatever that is. The world is made up of all kinds of shapes and colors, Dr. Doherty needs to remember his oath as a physician and get his ego out of the way.

I had surgery for skin cancer. I have to say that the entire encounter with Dr. Doherty and his staff was helariously entertaining. It was so enjoyable that I am looking for more reasons to go there again. Well, I have these spots on my back....... I will make an appointment. Need a good laugh. Besides that - his surgery skills could win any price at the county fair in the department for fine needle work. You get much more than just superb medical expertise. I highly reccomand him.

Best dermatologist in Whatcom County, hands down. I have had 2 melanomas and have been seen every year for the last 10+ years for checkups. I've seen every other dermatologist in Bellingham, trying to find one that I feel cares, is cautious, listens to my concerns, and takes time in the appointment to do the job well. Dr. Doherty is very very nice and his nurse and staff are awesome too. So sweet. I finally feel like I can rest at ease. Don't waste your time with any other dermatologist.

I saw Dr. Doherty for the first time today, and I cannot speak more highly of him. What a great bedside manner! Professional, respectful, and with a great sense of humor, he and his nurse, Sue, totally put me at my ease. He listens, and his attitude is one of putting the patient's needs first. His receptionist was also friendly and kind. I will definitely be going back to Dr. Doherty should the need arise.
