Family members with mania
I will be forever grateful that Dr. Selassie was willing to treat or advise the three members of my family who were having grandiose thoughts coupled with lack of sleep. One was uncomfortable seeing him, so Dr. Selassie told him about the walk-in Crisis Clinic at Sheppard-Pratt. He made time to see me in person at 7AM when another one was advised not to take lithium, even though his behavior was becoming erratic enough to attract police attention. He provided me with a reference on the efficacy of lithium on reducing suicide risk. You will need to tolerate long waits. If you have paperwork, consider filling it out during session.Sadly, my insurance changed. I paid out of pocket for awhile and left on good terms when I was able to locate another practitioner. His practice would do well to hire a psychiatric nurse who could take vitals and pitch in when his schedule is running behind.

Condescending, Inconsiderate, Burned out long ago
Saw him from my preteens into early adulthood. Seemed OK at first, but once I got older, I realized he was over prescribing me medications for ADHD & eventually bipolar 2 & doing a terrible job of monitoring my experience with it. Once I started having even the slightest opinion about my treatment, he was completely unreceptive to any input I had about wanting to stop or try different medications, & I never asked for anything narcotic or scheduled. My brother, 3.5 years my junior, started & stopped seeing him around the same time I did. Not only was he even nastier to him, at one point towards the end, they had an appointment where he was using my chart to remember their last appt. & didn’t realize he wasn’t me until the appt. was almost over & he used my name to address my brother. When my brother corrected him, he repeated my bro’s name very perplexed, then proceeded to switch the correct chart like “ho-ho, whoopsie me”. Unacceptable, unprofessional behavior from a licensed M.D.

excellent doctor
Dr. Selassie is a caring, compassionate doctor. Both of my children have seen doctor Selassie for over 5 years. Not only does Dr. Selassie take time with his patients, but he also returns our calls, the same day, and takes time to listen and discuss our children's needs. Nor has he ever charged us for these after hours 5-10 minute conversations. Yes, there is sometimes a wait. However, Dr. Selassie takes our insurance (very rare for a good psychiatrist). He is just a very busy doctor.

Don’t go to him
We were supposed to have a check up meeting after he had not prescribed medication the first session to speak to my therapist. We scheduled a meeting and the office did not follow up with me, when I called they had no confirmation of me going or my email or my phone number which I had given to them. They told me they would send me an email before the time of our call and I never heard anything. I couldn’t find his email and called the office 10+ times to no response. So unprofessional, and unhelpful. Would not recommend for your teenage who needs help.

I’ve been a patient of Dr. Selassie’s for many years. I came to his care after a recommendation from a friend. It was a difficult time for me. I was new to Washington DC and the thought of needed to find a new doctor was daunting. I’m grateful to have found a doctor who is caring, empathetic, and truly listens to my concerns.

Very good doctor but not good at returning calls. Relies on staff to relay important communications which results in data being lost or misconstrued. Does not like complex cases or smart complicated people.

This man decides who he would like to treat. Needing help and getting rejected by a psychiatrist! Not even a recommendation. How about that?

I was a patient of Dr. Selassie for many years. He did run late most of the time. Please be fair to the doctors everywhere, the patients are late for their appointments or / and the patients “HOG” the doctor’s time. I always left his office feeling and thinking I can conquer my challenges. I stop going to see Dr. Selassie because I moved to another state. I hope my thoughts help.

After seeing him for many years he dropped my insurance provider with two weeks notice after telling me a few days prior that he’ll see me in 4 weeks. Try finding a provider excepting new patients with openings in a two week period. Very unprofessional and unethical. Not a way to treat patients.
