Competent and empathetic
Dr. Varkula helped me tremendously when I was hospitalized. She really listens to you and genuinely wants her patients to improve. I'm forever grateful for how she listened and advocated for me when I was at my lowest.

Been going to her since I was young and now a college graduate. I can thank her for that because without someone who listens, helps and is able to prescribe the right medication I’d have never made it through school. She’s great! (As noted, the office staff could be nicer and more efficient)

Dr Varkula tried to be both med management and therapist but was clearly not competent at either. When our child’s condition worsened, she avoided seeing us and said she was only responsible for meds. She then tried to have our child removed from us and locked in a facility out of state. Thank goodness the social worker stood up and said we were not the problem. Our child went to a new doctor and immediately began to improve.

I got more insight and specific help out of one visit with Dr. Varkula than a year’s worth of therapy. She is skilled, kind and to the point. She also managed my meds and explained them in ways no other provider has in years of being in anti-depressants.

Dr Varkula provides a calm, yet professionally intellectual assessment of her patients because of her empathetic demeanor. One does not feel rushed. She is prompt in returning messages and shares her continued medical knowledge about new medications and old standards.

Dr. Varkula has helped me in battling my depression and anxiety immensely. I struggled for 10 years before meeting her. She includes me and works with me in all of the decisions and changes regarding my health. I am finally feeling great about my mental health! Office staff is not the friendliest. They seem miserable and you can always hear them complaining, but I am not there to see them, I am here to see Dr. V.

Staff was rude, unhelpful, and bungled our initial appointment, and reckless for her medication refills. They blamed my daughter with autism for their scheduling error (Karen, I even called and left you a voicemail confirming the appointment you made with my daughter THE SAME DAY, shame on you—own your error), which is dispicable. No reasonable attempt was made to involve Dr. Varkula for a reasonable resolution. Dr. Varkula, if you monitor these comments, your staff needs to be reviewed!

×Post a ResponseAre you Dr. Varkula?
Dr. Varkula in some ways is competent. However, I found that over time, she did not seem to work as a team (child, doctor, parent). She did not adequately address my concerns about medication. As my child's treatment progressed, and her recommendations were questioned, rather than work towards a family centered solution, the relationship became almost adversarial. Be cautious.
