Terrible Experience
Had Surgery - she implanted a scratched lens into my right eye. Took no responsibility nor showed any empathy. A nightmare experience.

lack of transparency in pricing
On my first visit I asked whether or not my insurance would cover the cost of my cataract surgery. I was told that my insurance had pre-approved the surgery and that it wouldn't be a problem. I was never told about potential hospital fees due to the fact that Dr. Zhang performs all surgeries at Marin General. Thankfully, I received an email from Marin Health on the evening before my surgery saying that $3700 would be due on arrival. When I called my insurance in a panic, they said I'd probably owe considerably more than that. I cancelled the surgery right away. Dr. Zhang and her office has refused to acknowledge that they should have apprised me of potential hospital fees. They are now charging me a cancellation fee and refusing to even meet me half way. Nor are they willing to acknowledge that they should have told me to look into potential hospital fees. I went to Dr. Shin, and the first thing they did was walk me through all of the pricing scenarios, down to the cost of eye drops.

She’s great…so is her staff.
Dr. Zhang is knowledgeable, her training superb. Beyond that, she’s very pleasant and I always look forward to my visits. I’d gone to her predecessor, Dr. Anderson, for decades and was distressed when he retired but he assured me he’d gotten the best of the best to take his practice forward. I think he did just that. Very pleased with Dr. Zhang’s care for my aging eyes…the “flashing lights” I see, their cause…and also the assurance I’m not yet ready for cataract surgery. She’s not a surgeon who does surgery simply because she could, she does it when it is appropriate for the patient. Thank you Dr. Anderson for your care and for putting my eye health in the hands of Dr. Zhang.

Incompetent support staff
Dr. Zhang's after hours care line is atrocious. I called and tried to come up with a solution when my wife was having a weekend emergency. Being new to the area, we don't have an official ophthalmologist but needed care asap due to extreme pain and burning in her eye. So much so that she wasn't able to see. Rather than trying to see if Dr. Zhang would make an exception to her no new patients on weekends rule, the woman who answered the phone told me it "wasn't her problem" and repeated over and over again to go to the emergency room. Keep in mind that Dr Zhang is listed on Dr Nickels voicemail as the doctor on call-so to call the dr on call and only to be refused to be seen seems crazy. And then, to add insult to injury, the woman who answered the phones hung up on me midsentence. How is this professional? And incredibly cold, rude and the opposite of what a doctor (should) stand for as a caretaker.
