Terrible customer service and business practices! We have been taking our son here for the past 2 years. After our last appointment in fall of 2022, we missed our 6 month follow up in the spring of 2023. We called the office number multiple times Monday-Friday during business hours and left multiple messages to find out our appointment time as I had lost the appointment reminder card. They never answered the phone or returned our messages. They did however send us a bill for $50 for the missed appointment. We called multiple times and left more messages over the next 6 months to pay the bill and reschedule and could not reach anyone and no one returned our calls. They then sent us a bill for a missed appointment 6 months later that we never scheduled! More calls and messages…no response! We live an hour and a half away and could not just run by their office so we assumed the practice was no longer in business. After calling again in March of 2024, I tried selecting the physician’s line option on the messaging service and FINALLY reached a real person! I explained our frustration with not being able to reach them for over a year and no returned calls. I was made to feel like a liar and told there was nothing wrong with their phone lines. Also, in order to schedule another appointment for my son, I was made to pay the $50 for our missed appointment a year prior, despite their lack of communication. My son needed an eye appointment desperately so I paid it and scheduled for April 19. On the morning of the appointment, someone from their office called to reschedule our appointment because they had a tech out sick that day. We had already taken off work and scheduled a babysitter and were out money and time but we were not able to charge them $50 for our inconvenience! We rescheduled for 10 days later. We drive 1.5 hours to this new appointment and upon arrival we’re told that we were not on the schedule. The girl at the front desk was very polite, apologetic, and understanding. She asked her office manager if they could see us today and were told it would be at least a 3 hour wait. We explained the entire situation including our long drive, the lack of communication from their office, their error in rescheduling our appointment, and billing us for appointments we never scheduled. The office manager again made us feel like liars and that there is no issue with their phones. She told us we could wait another 3+ hours in addition to the 30 minutes we had already waited there or come back in a month! I am sorry but trying to keep a 3 year old entertained for that length of time in a small waiting room is unrealistic. The office manager was snappy with me and my husband and unapologetic. They made us feel like this was our problem and did not care to make it right. We asked them to forward our son’s information to a different ophthalmologist and she snapped “Well the only other offices are in Birmingham or Nashville.” At this point, I would drive anywhere to not have to do business with this office. Extremely rude and unprofessional!

My sons Dr.
Dr Calderwood is extremely nice and creates a welcoming atmosphere for the children. She kept my son at ease before and after surgery.. while at the follow up visit after checking she stated to him I’m extremely happy with the way it turned out. Those were powerful words to a teenage boy who was very nervous. We are with her for life! Thank you so much to her staff that is just as Great!

Extremely Long wait times, but my daughter had seen her since she was 1 staff and Dr was very patient with her, she did an amazing job correcting her eye, I have refered more people than i can count to her because she was so wonderful, thorough, and patient, my daughter has gottennow 9 year old has seen her every year since until I call to confirm an appointment and they have dropped her insurance carrier. Now I have to find another she is comfortable with and go through her history, and pray they can do the surgery if ever needed again. I feel sorry for all the Families that will be affected by this. It's so hard to find a GOOD Dr in any field as it is especially one that your child has grown up with and adored.

Wonderful experience
The office staff and the Doctor's assistant were all very pleasant and professional. Dr Caulderwood was also very pleasant and thorough. After my initial examination, the doctor explained my condition and my options very clearly. The doctor recommended surgery, but did not push or pressure me to have the surgery. I am so glad that I went to Dr Caulderwood and took her advise. Less than a week out from surgery and by vision is greatly improved and continues to improve daily. I would highly recommend Dr Caulderwood!

Dropped our insurance the week before surgery!
Dr. Calderwood saw my granddaughter when she was 1 year old and said she would need surgery but 4 years later 1 week before her scheduled surgery when we went for our pre op appointment they told us they dropped our insurance.. Now we along with lots of other people are going to have to get on a waiting list that could be 6 or more months just to see a new doctor.. The poor special needs kid whose eyes are so bad she can’t even walk a straight line.. will just have to wait even longer.. Just great!!

The staff are friendly, but service is slow. We arrived at 2:15 for a 2:30 appointment. We stayed until almost 5:00. The tv in the waiting room was not operational, so it was difficult to entertain my 8 year old. We will not come back.

I highly recommend Dr. Calderwood! She has been so helpful with our 2 year old son and correcting his vision problems. She shows patience and kindness towards our child and spends extra time explaining next steps of the treatment plan for my son to my husband and I. We had a great experience with her as our son's doctor!

My son has seen Dr. Calderwood for 1.5 yr for his lazy eye. We had a hard time making him wear the glasses at first and had frequent appointments that were so long, I almost gave up on trying, wanting to try another doctor but my wife kept going with him. I've been back twice in the last month and a half and both times it was easily half the amount of time spent in the past, eyes drops and all. The nurses are always fun, the doctor is great and my kid can see out of his bad eye now. I'm relieved

Dr. Calderwood was recommended to me by a friend. I am an adult and found her exam to be very thorough and her explanations were more than I have ever had from my previous eye doctor. I know she specializes in pediatric eye problems, but she is also an excellent adult ophthalmologist! The wait time is worth it for a exam and evaluation by her and her staff. Excellent experience.

Dr. Calderwood and her staff are the best - she is so calm and knowledgeable. My child was a " work-in" and referred from our pediatric dr office. We knew we would be waiting but were so happy that we could get in. She was able to explain my son's eye problem and will watch it for several months before doing surgery. Thanks to the whole staff for a great job! I would give 10 stars if possible and recommend her to all my friends. (I made an appointment to see her myself).

I have a special needs child and have seen Dr. Calderwood for two visits. Each time she has been very thorough in her exam and has explained and answered all my questions. I appreciate the extra time it requires for an exam of my child and the staff's patience. She is a very caring doctor and I am glad she came to Huntsville.

The doctor was rude to her own staff, and she was not very patient or friendly to her patients. She got my daughter's prescription wrong and stood by it after a second visit. My daughter couldn't see out of her glasses at all so I had to pay to have a new doctor's prescription after paying a good bit for a prescription that is not even able to be used.

×Post a ResponseAre you Dr. Calderwood?
If possible I would not give a single star. Unprofessional office with zero respect for patients. Waited 1 1/2 hours to be seen by staff member. No apology for the wait was offered. After a brief examination we were ushered into the waiting area again. Waiting area was packed so we waited in the noisy play area while our infant son tried to sleep. 30 mins later saw the dr. Dr Calderwood never introduced herself and did not apologize. Proceeded to make our infant son scream until we had enough.

I had adult strabismus surgery and was very pleased. Of course her practice is predominately children and she is the ONLY pediatric eye surgeon in this area so you may have to wait but she is extremely through and patient and worth the wait. I also do anesthesia everyday for surgeons and rarely do you see one as gifted as she

We sat in the waiting room for an hour before they called our name. Once we made it into the room, we were rushed through the initial eye exam and then the person asking my 5 YO son questions was abruptly called out by the dr, no explanation. We were in limbo for another 20 minutes. During that time, my son had to use the bathroom so we left and went out into the hallway to the restrooms by the elevators and finally after that, we saw the dr, who spent a grand total of 10 minutes with us.
