Great Surgeon
Dr. Waltonen explained my thyroid condition every step of the way, and when it eventually turned out to be cancerous, he answered all questions, called me first, and went over my options. I elected to have a total thyroidectomy, and he explained everything in detail. He made me feel comfortable on operation day, and everything turned out exceptionally well! I would highly recommend!

I was referred to Waltonen after being diagnosed with oral cancer in July 2022. I have had preop visits, oral and neck surgery (Waltonen was the attending surgeon), and multiple post op visits and STILL HAVE NOT MET HIM. His resident, Dr Patel, is a fine doctor with a great personality, but it just seems like Dr Waltonen would have the decency to at least step in to introduce himself. He signs all of my medical records stating he "agrees with the resident's findings". However, he has never seen me. I cannot recommend this doctor to anyone.

I really enjoyed my appointment with this doctor. He was direct, easy to understand and even a little funny! That's always nice at a potentially scary appointment with a specialist. I would have no hesitations recommending him to family or friends. His clinic was nice as well. Overall it was a great experience.

He came highly recommended to me for cancer surgery. Easy to talk to, and I had no problem understanding his explanations. Answered all my questions in a way I could understand and was very forthright - no beating around the bush.

Dr. Waltonen was the surgeon to treat my tongue cancer with surgery 1 year ago (January, 2016) and he was extremely clear in his explanations and took time to explain the procedure and the ramifications. He has followed up with me since then and following radiation. I recommend him and Wake Forest even though I live a few hours away. In fact I encouraged my neighbor to go there for her cancer and she did (another doctor, but same Cancer center).
