Total Success
Dr. Metzl and his team did an excellent job. He removed a bone spur on the top of my heal bone and another within the Achilles tendon itself. He used the Speedbridge technique to finish the surgery. He used a conservative approach and did not perform an FHL tendon transfer as I had hoped. I was weight bearing at two weeks in a boot, walking without a boot at 3 weeks, walking 1 to 2 miles at 6 weeks, hitting golf balls at two months, playing golf at 2 1/2 months (in a cart), and hitting tennis balls at 3 months. At 4 months, I was jogging and not even thinking about my heal. Justin Rostetter at UC Health in Sterling was my physical therapist and was very helpful in my recovery. He let me recover at my own pace. I was reluctant to have surgery because I am 72. I had read that the recovery period was 6 to 12 months and I did not want to miss that much time. My Achilles had not ruptured, but I was in a lot of pain and could not play tennis. Dr. Metzl and his team is awesome.

Joshua Metzl permanently disabled me in pre-planned ankle surgery. For two weeks my entire foot burned and tingled horribly, and that never went away in the medial area. He damaged nerves, gave me pain in areas that weren't the focus, and took much longer than planned, employing tourniquet time that exceeded generally accepted limits. He did not explain risks, details nor recovery with me at all; he missed an appointment, did not respond adequately to my pain in recovery and did not follow up as promised with subsequent providers I sought care from. He had almost nothing to say about severe pain and swelling 6 months after surgery and he has since ignored me repeatedly. He has demonstrated damaging and unethical care, and I didn't previously realize just how little a professional provider could care. Make no mistake, this person is someone to stay away from. I am shocked at what he has done, and I face a lifetime of permanent pain and limitations.

This doctor is very knowledgeable in his field. However he just doesn’t explain things well in layman’s terms. He always seems rushed and doesn’t ask you if you have any questions. He does reply promptly in his emails. He is a very skilled surgeon so if you need surgery he’s the best.

He was very thorough, took the time to answer my questions and refer me to a specialist to correct my misaligned knee. He explained that I would have better success with the ankle revision if knee was straight. He is extremely quick at answering me via the patient portal.

I had ankle reconstructive surgery by Dr. Metzl in November of 2017. I never came out of that surgery the same. Post op I only saw Dr. Metzl twice and I believe both times were only because I was having issues with the post-op recovery (infection & major pain which he blew off). 10 months later I had this surgery redone by a different doctor and learned that my seral nerve had been severed in the first sugery and the new surgeon feels that nothing was even repaired in the previous surgery like it was stated in my post op report. On top of this my insurance was billed twice for the first surgery and I am not sure why this was ever the case. Today I am still dealing with the nerve pain from the original surgery. There is not a day that goes by that I do not have pain in my ankle/ foot. If I could do this over again I would NOT allow Dr Metzl to ever operate on me.

I am new to Denver and recently suffered a fractured right fibula near the ankle. Being new to town I was not sure which Orthopedic Surgeon to visit and was nervous since this was my second broken ankle. However, I was referred to Dr. Metzl through a mutual friend and got an appointment the next day. From the moment I met the staff for my initial consultation I knew I made the right choice. The entire staff is extremely professional and gave me tons of confidence headed into my surgery. They to

In May 2017, I suffered an extremely traumatic pilon fracture and dislocated ankle. I was terrified, didn't know what to do and was worried that my ankle would never be the same. After seeing Dr. Metzl, he immediately put my mind at ease, and assured me that we would get through this together. He was informative and always had time to answer my questions. Throughout my time seeing Dr. Metzl, his methodical, confident and personal approach constantly reassured me that I was in the right hands.

AVOID, in spite of what your insurance company says. The receptionist, Taylor, thinks she is a doctor and freely tells you if she will (or will not) ask the doctor based on her opinion. Dr. Metzl never let me finish a question before going off on a condescending rant about something completely inapplicable. His "diagnosis" consisted of two minutes of vague circle gestures on the X-ray before saying I was good to go. I got a second opinion; she found the break immediately.

The entire experience at the Steadman Hawkins Clinic was great. The front desk was friendly and acknowledged me right when I walked in the door. The doctor was smiling and friendly. He didn't make me feel stupid when i asked questions about my foot. I did have to wait to be seen for a while but that is expected at such a great clinic.

Went to clinic based on recommendation PCP, the experience was abhorrent. The front office staff was rude, dismissive and on their cell phones. Wait time was excessive I actually saw an intern or resident first (unclear) and then Dr. Metzl who explained that I had a 3rd degree sprain on my ankle which is the worst possible sprain of an ankle. The x-ray technician did not put on the lead apron, she explained that I receive more radiation from flying in an airplane and that I shouldn?t worry.
