Felt rushed, unheard, lack of compassion, did not install any confidence that the injections would help my condition.

Wouldn’t see me after hearing I was work comp
I am an RN who worked with Dr Stapleton in the past when he was at Providence Portland. I went to his office to investigate pain management options for my work comp injury. His FNP met with me today. He wasn’t able to answer my questions regarding possible future treatments (I had questions about medications and about spinal cord stimulation for my rare condition, CRPS). His staff called me later and relayed my questions to the doctor, and I was told the first thing he did was look up my insurance. He said that work comp rarely pays for spinal stimulation for CRPS patients, so he wasn’t willing to see me to answer questions. I told the office assistant that I primarily wanted to see him as a second opinion, to learn his opinions on my treatment options, as I used to work with him and highly respected him. He wasn’t willing to see me. I was led to believe he would only see me if I was privately insured and doing a procedure.

They say they are "pain care"That's fine if you only have one joint that hurts. Never saw the doctor. Was relegated to a NP on video.

At his Happy Valley office I never saw Dr. S, only his nurse practitioner, Barb. Her moods on my visits varied from rude and unpleasant to impersonal, but more or less pleasant. When I mentioned some of the more unpleasant visits to staff, the common reply was, "Oh, that's just Barb". {The other staff were always friendly and polite.) She looked at my info and prescribed steroid shots twice (with little relief); then the two required shots preliminary to having RFA treatment, which I flunked. On the 5th visit she proffered another steroid shot as my insurance would cover it, despite it not working twice before. I blame myself for not being more proactive with her, but I blame her more for not inviting any input to me, as the patient. At the last visit, #6, she looked down at her papers as always, not at me, and said "You need to see Dr. Kellogg, (who referred me here). A bit confused, I asked if this meant she was done with me. "Yes", she said, period. Dr S was always friendly and open

The 2 times I visited I was treated rudely. I recently moved to Oregon from California where I have been with a well regarded established Pain Doctor for about 6 years. I have received various types of interventions. After trying various opiates for the last year or so I have been taking the smallest available dose 5mg. oxycodone either 3 or 4 times a day for spinal stenosis and osteoarthritis. I was referred to Dr. Stapleton for continuation of my meds. I never saw him but only his rude assistants. They made it clear that the only goal was to get me off opiates with spinal injections. I agreed (dubiously) to try to taper opiates over a 4 month period. At my 2nd appt. just after a week hospital stay with Dilaudid or oxycodone 8 times a day they would only give me OxyContin 3 times a day for one week! Then 2 more weeks to be completely off opiates with the goal of doing injections. This hasn’t worked for me and I was willing to try but this is NOT a realistic taper plan. Unacceptable!

My experience with the doctor was not positive on most levels. He's a certain "type" that you can figure out in about 30 seconds: I met with him for about 3 to 4 minutes, got an arrogant and condescending explanation of the procedure - an epidural injection - followed by a going through the motions catch-all, 'Any questions?" For the single shot I received I was charged over $2,000 dollars full freight, reduced to $255 with insurance. 7 or 8 months earlier I got the exact same injection from a sports injury clinic for $22. Apparently, the main reason for the difference in price is the fact that the good doctor conducts his business in the operating room of a main hospital, as opposed to a clinical setting. Yes, I "get" that patients must be their own advocates. But doctors and office staff need to do better on communicating on pricing issues as well. In this case, I felt blind-sided by the bill; if I was on the corner begging with a tin cup, Dr "Joe" would likely steal the cup.

My most recent back pain dates to Januray 2019. After appts w/PCP with no relief referred to my neuro surgeon. He referred me to Dr. Stapleton. Great recommendation from my wife's hip surgeon, "oh! Joe Stapleton, he's one of the best out there!" Right on! First contact w/his office staff reflects his philosophy, help patients & be empathetic in doing so. Dr. S is friendly at all appts & is an excellent listener, answer any questions, & explains in detail all procedures. His Wilsonville Surgery Ctr staff is the GREATEST! You feel welcomed & know they simply want you feeling better when leaving as he does! Side note, Dr.S himself called when experiencing issues with the trial SCS implant. Twice he called me and even met me at his office on "Sunday" to resolve the issue. He & staff seamlessly communicated w/neuro surgeon & staff for the placement of the permanent implant of the SCS. I highly recommended Dr. Stapleton!!! Great caring man.
