In October 1999, my bipolar 55 year old father experienced a massive stroke and was not expected to survive. The emergency treatment team focused on stabilizing my father medically, but dumped him completely off all of his psych meds. Long story short, Dr. Duffy visited my father at a local nursing home and offered to transfer him to a geriatric psych unit so that he could help stabilize my father mentally. Dr. Duffy helped my father to live 2 1/2 more years with a much better quality of life.
