Self Referrals to Illicit Needless Examinations
"On 2/24/2023 I went to Maine Eye to receive a consultation for corrective surgery for a lazy eye. I received good care from provider Dr. Matthew Thees. He performed an examination and confirmed that I have a correctable lazy eye. I was instructed by the practice to return on 4/24/2023 for a consultation with Dr. Jeffrey Berman to prep for the actual surgery. On that date, I drove two hours and went into the office. Dr. Berman spent less than ten minutes with me and spent nearly the entire time looking at my chart. He then refused to correct the lazy eye and instead gave me the exact same examination, once again confirming that I have a lazy eye. He told me that he would not provide surgery unless the issue 'got worse'. During the 'exam' he did not ask if my vision issues caused me trouble in my personal life and brushed off my concerns. He then opted to advise me to buy new frames and expensive lenses from their in house glasses store.

Dr. Berman was attentive to everything I had to say. At 71 years old I feel lucky to have been seen by him. I had double vision, caused by my blood pressure. He saw me after regular hours for he's very busy. I'm grateful for that. I did some research on him and found that he's the only Ophthalmologic Pediatric surgeon in the state of Maine. He has a lot on his plate. He's down to earth and focused. I highly recommend him.

Dr. Berman seems knowledgeable. At least in what my child was seeing him for. Once my child had problems he moved up the surgery date and got my child right in. His office staff is helpful and polite. Dr. Berman, however, does not have the best bedside manner. He is very to the point and dry.

Poor and condescending bedside manner. Office staff is rude and inflexible. Wait times are excessive. Mid-level provider failed to introduce herself appropriately. This guy is the only pediatric game for miles so people are forced to put up with this crap. Head to Boston if you possibly can.

Though Dr. Berman primarily serves children who need eye surgery, he specializes in a few aspects of adult eye care. My regular eye doctor referred me to him for one of these specialties. I found him informative, professional, kind, and engaged. I left feeling I had been heard and I had been well cared-for. He explained things well, he did not rush me, and I understood what the next steps would be. His assistant, Julie, was also kind, informed, professional and reassuring.
