Don't expect any real treatment for your problem
I moved to MA so I had to leave my previous gastro, who had been my doctor for a long time. I saw this doctor, we discussed a colonoscopy. I told the nurse there that the prep they gave me never had a good effect, but they pushed me to use it which resulted in my needing another procedure. I have had the issues I have now on and off for many years, and my previous doctor took care of me. After having a real issue for over two months straight, he declined to give me any real treatment. You spend money to go to a specialist so that they are comfortable using effective medications, so you can get some relief. Not to pay them big money to do procedures and then pretty much leave you hanging. There is a woman doctor there I saw first, she told me a certain medication is terrible, poison, and will undo all the good my supplements and medications are doing. Then Barakat tells me to take that medication. So is it good or bad ? Go somewhere else.

Very responsive
When we called his office, he couldn’t see me as he was booked. Told me to go to the ER. Searched for when I checked in, found me in the ER between doing procedures and then helped me get expedited care. I needed immediate surgery. He was very helpful.

Very Caring Doctor Who Listens to My Concerns
Dr. Barakat is a great doctor! He treated me with nothing but respect and has listened to ALL of my concerns. He also preformed my Flexible sigmoidoscopy recently and I felt extremely comfortable with him and everything he told me. He truly cares about his patients wellbeing. I will have him as my GI for as long as he works for Beth Israel. Amazing doctor!

Rude and condecending. He would ask questions and talk over me when I tried to respond. He was also arrogant and condescending about a colleague who I've seen for years and has much more experience than him. He didn't seem very motivated in finding a diagnosis and I ended up spending a week in the hospital when it could have been avoided by listening to how bad things were getting. The only reason I went to him was that there was an immediate appointment available. I won't be going back to this arrogant jerk.

I wanted so much to like him. I came to him after having ongoing symptoms after diagnosis. He seemed very knowledgeable and well-read in my first appointment. His nurse was amazing and so caring. But in my second appointment, after confirming that many of my symptoms were still present, we went through a list of symptoms of another condition. After answering yes to almost all of those symptoms, he says, "Well, since you don't have any of those symptoms..." I was so shocked at how little he seemed to be listening. I later did a followup scope with him and told him that I was unable to continue with the diet he had me doing in prep for the scope, and he simply didn't even act like he heard me talking. Overall, he seemed annoyed at me for being there, and only half listened to my concerns. It's like he had an idea in his mind and would not hear anything that did not line up with that idea.

Not a great appt. I didn’t wait long, but he didn’t listen well to my concerns. He might be a good dr but it is hard to think of continuing to see him with his poor listening skills. After 5 minutes of talking, he made his diagnosis but didn’t listen well to my concerns, summing them up as somatic symptoms associated with my diagnosis. My PCP and I disagree and will get a 2nd opinion. Nice building and nurses.
