Great visit and physician
Dr. Goran Avery was kind, patient and engaged me as a person and patient. He listened and asked me questions. Dr. Avery also explained every step for a knee aspiration. He also explained why he ordered some testing and not others (i.e. an MRI).

Dr. Gordon Avery at OrthoVirginia
Dr. Avery is a consummate professional with a wonderful personality; he puts you immediately at ease. He is an expert in his field, who patiently explains procedures and answers your questions. I have full confidence in his abilities. He took care of a stress fracture in my right femur, carefully explaining what caused it, the procedure, what to expect during and after the surgery, and the recovery period. Two weeks out, I am walking on both legs. I would recommend Dr. Avery to anyone experiencing orthopedic issues. The staff at Dr. Avery’s McLean and Arlington offices are amazing, as well. They are kind, considerate, and very helpful. Kudos to Dr. Gordon Avery and the staff at both of these locations for OrthoVirginia.

Thorough and nice to work with
I have consulted with Dr Avery twice in a couple of years and find him friendly and willing to listen. He always discusses the test results and explains his recommendations. I feel confident in his assessments and treatment plan.

Friendly and informative visit. Gave me a good idea of treatment options. Office does not offer radio frequency treatment, however.

rushed in, gave wrong diagnosis, wrong treatment
I saw Dr. Avery July 2022 as a follow-up to a visit with a physician assistant I met with regarding an injury. I have never seen him before and saw him because at OrthoVA you take whomever is first available or wait. The PA did a sonogram and took notes about the injury, neither of which were in my notes so no documentation of the injury. Dr. Avery came in and was in a rush and talked fast. He pulled up an old xray that wasn't related to the injury. I told him that was the wrong image and what I was there for. He then said he saw no issues with the xray but came up with a guestimate of what the issue was. I told him again what the injury was. He had me get on the exam table and did hip tests. I told him it again it wasn't a hip injury. He then prescribed a shot without understanding the injury or offering other treatment options. Was there over 2 hours but only seen for a few minutes b/c they cram in lots of patients at the same time. they also aggressively prescribe shots

I am unable to recommend him for young athletes
My son and I met with Dr. Avery. He is competent but it became clear that he doesn’t or shouldn’t work with young athletes. What we thought was a minor shoulder injury became a possible ending of all my son’s dreams. At one point he grabbed my hand pushed my fingers back and said “Blame your parents for your hyper flexibility in your shoulder “. I was in shock and tried to be respectful. He then recommended physical therapy and when I asked about a therapist who specializes in shoulder injuries his response was, “they are all the same” and “you can go anywhere”. When I asked if we should follow up, he said “no”. I am fortunate, both my husband and I are healthcare workers and when two different orthopedics heard how our appt went, they offered to assess my son. While the diagnosis was the same, it wasn’t dire and frankly very common when going through puberty. In addition, they each gave the name of the same physical therapists who specializes in baseball related injuries.

Sumed up in two words... Marcus Welby
The practice is large and still well organized. The staff was pleasant and efficient. Best of all was Dr. (Gordon) Avery. Dr Avery took the time needed to help even me understand what was going on. Even though he had lots of people to see, I didn't have to wait more than a few minutes, he seemed genuinely concerned with my (admittedly minor) issues, and I didn't feel at all rushed while I was talking to him.

My Favorite Orthopedic Doctor
As always, Dr. Avery was attentive, caring, professional and positive. He successfully operated on my shoulder years ago. I’m back for issues with my knee which already feels so much better! I would (and do) recommend Dr. Avery to my family and friends.

I had to have a repair to artificial hip. Dr Avery is pleasant and the surgery went well. But the surgical coordinator was extremely difficult to reach, sent me pre-op instructions extremely late, and the doctor's and the hospital's instructions conflicted. Dr Avery wasn't terribly informative about post-op instructions.

I found Dr. Avery to be thorough, knowledgeable, and easy to talk to. My issue was whether to have surgery to repair a ruptured tricep. Dr. Avery didn't recommend what to do, but he did an excellent job of discussing the pros and cons, which may it easy to decide. I understand that many orthopedists promote surgery, but Dr. Avery didn't do that, which I greatly appreciated.
