I Didn't Die
I didn't know enough to ask the right questions. Went in for a needle biopsy of the breast, two sites. Asked for topical anesthetic. None there. Asked for general anesthetic. None there. Never told that leaving or delaying was a choice. Clamped into a vice so tight the bruises didn't resolve themselves for weeks afterward. Felt every one of the injections as he went deeper into my breast. I let the whole room know how bad it was. I wasn't acting crazy, just really hurting. At the conclusion he told me that he had only been able to do one. He had used all the anesthetic that was safe. Later I wrote a letter stating that I couldn't do that again if he couldn't assure me it would be different. The only response I got was a form letter stating when my 2nd date was. (He did write an Rx for 2 anti anxiety pills). I got another doctor. Same hospital system. Entirely different experience. Why was this not available for the 1st? We had already talked about my pain concerns.
