Fixed my back
He diagnosed and treated me successfully 2 years ago for nerve injury resulting from a fractured vertebra. He explained the condition, discussed the treatment procedures, performed some kind of electrical stimulation or cauterization (I don't know the medical term for it), and accurately described the likely course of recovery. He has also made it a point to follow up with me periodically. I am now seeing him for radiculopathy in my neck. My appointments have never been rushed. The office staff at Mt. Sinai have been efficient. Wait times have almost always been fairly short. I recommend him.

Try anyone else but this dr. and staff
Dr. Perna was recommended by the dr. who fixed my broken femur. This Dr. was competent and did a great job so we thought his recommendation would be reliable. At first dr Perna and his office seemed very competent and while it is not the drs fault that the treatment did not work there was no follow up once our insurance denied another procedure. We last spoke to his office in august and I just received a call from the office today, almost 3 months later. I also must truthfully say that if I wasn't the one calling consistently to find out the progress of insurance approvals we most likely wouldn't have heard from him at all. We have now found another dr and I just picked up all of my husband's records/cd of his procedures and are hopeful our new Dr will be able to help or at least be more communicative about insurance issues. I regret trusting the referral and losing valuable time trying to rectify my husband's back issues. Will never recommend this Dr to anyone.

Might be a good doctor but no follow up
My insurance had a problem approving an mri. We did everything we should have butPerna’s office never followed up. I emailed and called numerous times. He might be nice but his office does not work. I just think they don’t care. Stay away.

I was a patient of Dr. Perna's for 4 years. His office was always terrible - always running behind, rude and incompetent staff, just to name a few problems, but he was always kind and seemed like a great doctor. However, within the last 16 months, things really took a turn for the worse. I waited 2 hours to be seen by him the last time I had an appointment and it felt rushed. I recently left 2 messages for him to call me and he never did. Went to a new doctor and found out I was misdiagnosed.

Dr. Perna administered trigger shots and advised me of ways to improve my posture. He is very good. Although his front desk staff are completely incompetent. On several occasions in the past year, the front reception have said they would return my call to make an appt but have not. I'm now switching doctors and after requesting a transfer of my records, nothing has been done and I was not contacted. It's been a month.

Dr Perna was very friendly and knowledgable during the consultation. I felt confident in his abilities. He had me go for an xray and assured me he would call me in 1-2 days. He never returned my call. I had left 3 messages with the answering service and still no phone call. I'm scheduled for an epidural and need to talk to him. Not sure what to do. What kind of Dr. doesn't return phone calls to a patient! I don't know how to rate him

He's confident and experienced. He looked at my MRI and explained it to me in detail. I entered his office full of anxiety. After my visit to his Manhattan Beth Israel office, and his evaluation, I felt relieved. He wouldn't be working at Beth Israel if he was not a top expert. He knows the spine better than a family doctor and most chiropractors. I trust him with my health.

×Post a ResponseAre you Dr. Perna?
Dr. Perna wasn't the worst doctor I've ever seen but he was far from the best. In addition to not doing much about my back pain (I had three epidurals, only one of which worked), he rarely if ever returns phone calls and most of his staff borders on incompetent. If I told you about some of the experiences I've had trying to contact them and schedule appointments, you'd think I was making them up.
