I can say without a doubt that Dr. Chen saved my life with my last surgery. Prior to Dr. Chen, I had received open repair mesh surgery using the plug and patch method with the chief general surgeon at UCLA. About 8 weeks out after, it had turned out I had a hernia recurrence and was experiencing excruciating levels of pain due to the previous surgeon's poor performance. After receiving a medical diagnosis with Dr. Chen, it was decided to perform plug removal and insert a new mesh using a laparoscopic approach. 10 weeks out after my surgery with Dr. Chen, I feel like a new man and am beyond happy. Thanks to God and thanks to Dr. Chen for their work :).

He will tell you the groin nerves are just sensory …he’s a f**kin liar…now I have to live the rest of my life like this … oh and he will blame your problems on anxiety instead of the surgery he did

He’s cuts nerves for any reason really and tells you they are sensory only which is 100$ a lie as I am living proof ...also mesh reaction is very real and Happens to most ...find a surgeon that cares about muscle function...tissue function ....mental health and restoring body back to normal ...he continues to ignore real patient feedback and if he says that’s a lie then ask him “ what have you modified in your surgeries to give this person a better quality of life ...he can’t ...just cares about making money ...cutting nerves and putting mesh back in so his UCLA hernia recurrence rate stays really low ....stay away stay away stay away

Dr. Chen performed neurectomy surgery to correct my severe hernia mesh pain in Jan. 2017. He was recommended by an NC doctor. He also corrected a mesh adhesion on my bladder, an indirect hernia, removed surgical clips, and nerve repair. He is the best! No more pain although still have mesh swelling (nasty stuff.)

Dr. Chen is an excellent doctor who went above and beyond his job as a surgeon to care for me. While I was waiting for my wife to recover from surgery I unfortunately collapsed at the entrance of the surgicenter he works at. Dr. Chen saw me, helped me up, and then brought me to the ED to get evaluated. He checked on me several times, helped facilitate my cardiac workup and also communicated with my family as to my progress. All of this obviously above and beyond the actual medical service he provided for my wife. Wonderful physician and ever better person.

Dr. Chen is an expert surgeon and communicator. During clinic he took the time to answer all my questions and patiently explain what to expect during and after surgery. He fixed my bilateral inguinal hernias and umbilical hernia with only tiny laparoscopic incisions and I was able to return to normal activities after just a few days. He shared photos from my surgery with me and my family. He is a master surgeon, very approachable, reassuring and makes each patient feel like they are his top priority.

Dr. Chen is competent and very respected by his colleagues, staff, and students, . He is also thorough and relaxed in the presence of his patients. He takes the time to explain his procedures, the diagnosis, the prognosis, and recovery issues. He is willing to receive and answer questions with respect and candor. To me, he was also very kind and committed to my recovery and care. I hold his in high esteem and respect and would recommend him to any of my friends.

I would never recommend Dr. Chen to anyone. In fact I would warn anyone thinking of having him perform surgery that he is negligent, and that UCLA / Santa Monica hospital is a dangerous hospital to have surgery performed at. Because of Dr. Chen's lack of proper supervision of his residents, and bad decisions when supervising my 85 year old mother in 2014, my mother passed away days after undergoing surgery on a hiatal hernia that should never have been a life threatening surgical procedure.

I have had 2 hernias repaired by Dr Chen: inguinal hernia repair about 6 years ago and a hiatal hernia repair 2 weeks ago. My hiatal hernia was very large. Apparently my pancreas and my stomach had slid up to occupy the space usually reserved for my lungs. The only pain I had with recovery was when it started to itch a few days ago; and that itching only lasted for a day. The nurses all say he is a brilliant surgeon. I would agree.
