Failed surgery
Nehels performed surgery L5-S1, I ended up worse after and he blew me off, saying I was released to full duty at work. When I couldn’t even carry a laundry basket! I have horrible sciatic nerve issues down my right side and it has continued to degenerate!

TERRIBLE PHYSICIAN
Dr. Nehls is a terrible doctor. He has poor bedside manner, is aloof, doesn’t listen to your concerns and isn’t kind and caring. He strung me along for months, only to inform me that my cervical situation was not severe enough to warrant surgery even though I had a pinched nerve in my neck with arm pain. He based this decision on one sentence on my EMG report. It was okay that he didn’t operate on me, as I wouldn’t have wanted him to be my surgeon anyway. I found a fantastic neurosurgeon that actually listened to me. I am 13 weeks post-op and doing great! I would not recommend him anyone. He was absolutely awful!!

After weeks of PT and a couple of cortisone injections Dr Nehls performed a laminectomy and microdiscectomy on L4-L5 for me in September 1996, and I had as close to a 100% recovery as you could ask for. In November of 2020 after 24 pain free years, I managed to injure my low back again. I’m going through the same process of PT now, and if necessary injections and I’m hoping I won’t need to have another surgery. But if I do, Dr Nehls would be my first choice.

He spent time with us to explain every detail of the MRI and exactly what was wrong and was honest enough to let me know that I needed quite extensive surgery and he recommended a different specialist in his group. I appreciate a straight forward, honest doctor.

Dr. Nehls performed a lamenectomy and fusion of cervical vertebrae C-3 through C-7. It corrected the numbness and tingling in my right arm. I was also impressed with the follow up care and attention I received by him and his office staff. I see a neurologist for another condition I have. He is in different neurology group based out of Cincinnati. I went to this neurologist for a second opinion as well as a fol;low up after this surgery. This neurolost tole me to give Dr. Nehls his praise

Dr. Nehls did my lumbar surgery in 2003. It's 2018 and still holding up! My recovery was fast and the work was superb. I went from hardly able to walk to being a marathon runner. I recommend him to anyone who needs this surgery done. Also, unlike other docs, he doesn't push for surgery as the first option. He is comfortable with conservative treatment until you are ready. I'm writing this review 15 years later because I really wanted to say thank you and this is the best way I know how.

I was never informed of the outcome of my surgery, his nurse explained it to me, and he never came to see me before I was released from the hospital, and I am way worse off then before the surgery, I would have NEVER had it done had I know the outcome! I went back after he released me, and was not approved for an MRI to see why I was still in so much pain, only to find out that appointment was never billed to my attorney! I would never go back to him AGAIN!

My appointment with Dr. Nehls was the worst experience I've ever had. His nurses were great but they were all frantically trying to get things ready because as they kept saying, he wanted to leave as soon as the appointment was over. I took two hours off of work, and an hour car ride in excruciating pain for him to spend 10 minutes with me and tell me nothing and when I tried to ask questions he literally showed me the door.

Dr. Nehls is probably the best doctor I have ever seen. I'm almost 6 months post op from a laminectony (done by a different doctor), and I've had more pain ever since. Dr. Nehls explained to me what was wrong. My old doctor said "nothing is wrong with you". This is the first time in six months that I've felt so confident in a doctor. He's one of the nicest people I've ever met and I HIGHLY recommend him to anyone who is looking for a neurosurgeon!

Both Dr. Nehls and his NP Kelly are a tremendous team. They are conservative when it comes to surgery which is what I appreciate. I'd like alternative therapies and options before going under the knife. Professional, courteous and honest. What more could you ask for from a clinician?

Talks at you instead of to you. Not very personable. And dissent listen to what you have to say.
