Didn't Listen
I went to Dr. Gurley for upper back (shoulder) pain. My injury did not present in a typical manner, so he decided in about 1 minute that there was probably no tear and I was just experiencing muscle spasms. I tried to explain how bad and debilitating the pain was, and he said again that it was just muscle spasms. I notice that most of the 5-star reviews on here are from men. I had the distinct impression that Dr. Gurley was writing me off as a weak woman who couldn't handle a little pain and was exaggerating her symptoms. I am the opposite of that After my regular doctor finally ordered an MRI that showed a tear and was referring me to an orthopedist, I asked to go to anyone but him, because I felt so dismissed. My new doctor was wonderful. He recommended surgery, after which he said that the tear was more extensive than they could even see on the MRI, and could only have healed with surgery. I went through another two months of pain because Dr. Gurley blew me off and didn't listen.

Perfect Experience!
PERFECT!! Dr. Gurley is a true professional in his field. He went over imaging with me and explained all options. Day of surgery, after I was prepped for procedure he came to visit me, he could tell I was nervous so he dropped everything and we just talked. Talked about surgery, talked about funny things in life till I was ready. That made my day and made my experience under the knife actually enjoyable since I knew who was taking care of my knee surgery. After procedure was complete we visited again, then sent me home with proper pain meds for recovery!! I will use Dr. Gurley for the rest of my life and have told all my close family members about his kind ways. Couldn't be happier with him and his practice!

Cut & Go!
Cut & Go! I wish that my experience with Dr. Gurley had been as good as other patients. I found that he did not listen, communicate, or set clear expectations well at all. I was also concerned that he never went over any of my imaging with me. I had never been to an ortho before (age 42), so I ignored my gut instinct to get a second opinion and stayed with him. He ended up performing a surgery on my shoulder (distal clavicle excision) and told me that he would look around while he was in there and fix anything else, which is standard. He either did not take a second to look at the labrum or saw the tear and decided not to fix it. This resulted in an additional year of pain, another shoulder surgery by a better surgeon for the SLAP tear, and months of rehab. I wish that I had listened to my instincts. I hope this helps anyone who is having doubts.

I think the surgery went well.
At my 1st office appointment, I was kept waiting an hour. At my 1st post-surgical appointment, he kept me waiting for over 2 hours. TWO HOURS!! At my next, as the clock hit 45 minutes, I got up and left

This is the second time Dr. Gurley has performed a quadriceps tendon repair on me (now my left knee matches my right one.) As before, he did a great job of the surgery, but the most impressive part about my experiences with Dr. Gurley and his staff is that they obviously care about you - really care! They are kind, patient, knowledgable in answering questions and helpful with little tips to make your recovery easier. In short, they make you feel comfortable during a stressful time. I have recommended many friends to him during the past 10 years, and ALL have told me they feel the same way. I'm sure those are just a few of the reasons he is so very busy.

Had surgery on July 27th this year for a full-thickness rotator cuff tear. Dr. Gurley gave good advice to help me decide on the surgery with no pressure to choose the surgery. He is apparently very experienced and competent in doing the surgery, based both on comments from other physicians and my personal result. His followup team, including his PA, Jennifer Porto, as well as both Mike and Shane in the College Park physical therapy group provided excellent care, providing motivation for rehabilitation and always taking time to answer all questions and providing any needed support. I'm very happy with the result.
