Outstanding ER physician
July 2023 went to ER for pain in center of chest, fatigue, and shortness of breath. Was seen right away and put in ER room. Dr. Mackuen was excellent, professional, and caring. She explained why she thought my symptoms could be more serious than what I thought was going on. After listening to her calm explanations, I reluctantly agreed to blood tests and x-ray. Results - pneumonia in both lungs and a pulmonary embolism in one lung! Dr. Mackuen got me on IV meds right away and kept checking on me. She also highly recommended at least an overnight stay in the hospital (which I did). Throughout the entire ordeal she was attentive, listened to my comments, asked about family history, and was very pleasant to both me and my husband, and was never dismissive. If I had not listened to her I would have died. That's not just my opinion but the opinion of my primary care doctor and my (new) hematologist.

Misdiagnosed dangerously
Took 5yo to ED for fever 105 & low 02. The staff triaged us fairly quickly, but immediately said it wasn’t as bad as “I thought.” We were told we’d get Motrin to bring fever down, but that was over 2 hours later. When we were called back to ED area the nurse didn’t touch my daughter or lay a stethoscope on her. I had a portable pulse ox I continuously checked her with & called a nurse in to re check fever. Oral temp of 104. Hours I watched my daughter cry and her respirations increase as we were told Covid was neg. Chest X-ray “unremarkable.” Negative for flu & strep. The doctor came in once to discharge us before even looking at my 5 yo. She asked a few questions, listened briefly to heart and a couple of upper breath sounds. Doctor states “this is just a super virus we’re seeing bc of all the masks coming off. Push fluids & give otc meds around the clock. Good luck.” I took my child home & watched her continue to struggle. 3 days later pediatrician dx pneumonia & dehydration.
