Recent Foot and Ankle Surgery
I was referred to Dr. Jones by my PCP to assess my collapsed left arch, that I had been managing with an ankle brace and anti-inflammatories for over ten years. Dr. Jones suggested surgery and gave me a detailed description of what would be entailed and the recovery - including about 6 weeks non-weightbearing in a cast - followed by transition to a walking boot plus physical therapy. The technical description of the surgery that was performed on March 19 is 'left subtalar and talonavicular fusion with Achilles lengthening, deltoid ligament reconstruction, and iliac crest autograft'.The surgery and recovery have been exactly as described by Dr. Jones. I found he and his associates to be excellent communicators. I had little or no waiting time for any of my appointments throughout the process. They responded promptly to questions I had on MyChart. I am now 15 weeks post-surgery. I can walk up to 3 miles and have resumed my normal exercise schedule.

Very professional, yet very personable, & friendly
Although I had to wait longer than my appointment time, it was worth it. Dr Jones did xrays and told me I had arthritis in my foot. I wasn’t happy about being told I will be getting a cortisone shot, but he was so confident that he was so good at doing this and that it wouldn’t hurt. He made me believe it too. He did it under the X-ray machine and all I felt was a little pressure. I highly recommend him.

Dr jones review I was referred to Dr. Jones by my PCP, following pain in a former surgery site. Through X-ray and CT, it was determined I may have to take the hardware out from my previous surgery. It had been 6 years and they said that my body was likely rejecting the hardware. I only met with Dr. Jones’ PA Tyler. He explained the surgery as “super quick and easy” never discussing any actual risks. He said I would meet Dr. Jones the day of the surgery. My surgery was in the afternoon so I hadn’t eaten all day, and then Dr. Jones showed up almost 2 hours later than the scheduled time. Quickly shook my hand and we went back. I woke up to my husband telling me that it took longer and that one of the screws was allegedly “stripped” so Dr. Jones decided to drill into my bone to get this screw out. This was NEVER discussed ahead of time as a possibility. Had it, I would have chosen to not take that screw out. He assured me that he filled it in with some other substitute and it would heal ok. I was told to stay off my feet for 10 days which I did. Came back for my post-op appt and they took out the stitches, no xray, told me to wear supportive but normal shoes and wait a few weeks for any intensive exercise. I went home and not even two hours later, while simply walking around my house in supportive shoes, I felt and heard a large crack. My bone had broken where the hole was drilled. I went back to meet with his PA, who first tried to say it was fine and when I prodded further he looked closer and confirmed it had broken. He put me in a boot and said it would heal in 4-6 weeks. We continued to have check ins and the more I spoke with other doctors, I realized this was not a 4-6 week break. They updated their timing to say a few months. The whole time the PA assuring me that it would heal. So for 4-5 months I walked around on a broken foot until they finally admitted no, it was not healing and I’d need more surgery. But their plan was just to slap a plate on it and hope that it would heal. My bone looked absolutely awful. And on top of that the bone itself was now shortened from the missing part, and smushed together with potential bone growth. I have had to have TWO subsequent surgeries since this one, which was supposed to be a “quick and simple” procedure as described. My latest surgery, I had to have bone taken from my hip to replace the gap in my bone that was a result of Dr. Jones’ teams poor judgement and aftercare. This has cost me tens of thousands of dollars in medical fees, childcare coverage, medical devices, PT, therapy, chiropractor and continued physical care. It has taken precious time away from memories with my children that I couldn’t make while being impaired each time. I now have 9 screws and a plate on my foot (I originally just had two screws) that I’m told will likely cause pain again one day and need to come out. I am in pain daily with my hip and foot. It’s 9 months post-op from my fourth surgery. It’s affected relationships, mental health, and more. I have heard nothing but bad things from anyone else I’ve talked to who has used OrthoCarolina. The bad news is that they are a monopoly in Charlotte, with referrals from all surrounding doctors. It’s an ortho-factory, if you will, churning through patients and not taking the time to address their needs and concerns one a personal basis. Tyler, the PA, seemed to be obliviously uneducated and hostile at one point when I asked why I was not Xray-ed initially. He told me he knew that I’d gone to get a second opinion. It was highly unprofessional and I should absolutely have had more attention and care paid, especially after what resulted. Do not go to this practice. Don’t go to this doctor or his PA. They’ve impacted my life and well-being for the last two years and I highly regret trusting them.

Ankle replacement
After reading about ankle replacement surgery, I realized it warranted a surgeon with significant expertise. Many surgeons are doing hip/knee replacement but the ankle joint is very different. I chose Dr. Jones after a recommendation from someone who works in the operating room with many different surgeons and am very glad I did. From the start, he explained the problem, recommended procedures and rehab very clearly. He and his staff are very responsive to messages and follow up questions. At 6 months out I am hiking again and while still not at 100% continue to improve each day.

Path to heal the heel
Dr. Jones paid close attention to my description of my heel pain and what has not worked for the past 7 months for a cure. He outlined his suggestions for relief and cure starting now. There is no doubt that he has personal experience with Planar Fasciitis. I am great full for his concern and capabilities.

Dr Jones has been wonderful to work with. I came from TN for surgery. Dr Jones is knowledgeable and talented … and he is willing to take the time to explain treatment snd options. He performed a revised Achilles’ tendon surgery and as a result, I can finally walk without pain again. Thanks Dr Jones for your care!

Dr. Carroll Jones is a 5 star foot and ankle surgeon in my opinion. He performed surgery on my left foot on January 28th, 2021 and even though I am still recovering through foot therapy, he did an excellent job. He is very laid back and approachable and has an awesome spirit. I strongly recommend Dr. Carroll to anyone!!!
