I feel it’s crucial to share my experience with Dr. Jekich so that no other family has to endure the same traumatic and unprofessional treatment. My child was seen by this Dr in the ED, where he wrongly diagnosed her with terminal cancer, telling her she would only have one year to live. He delivered this devastating news without both parents present, no convincing evidence to support the diagnosis, and no regard for the emotional impact on a young child.The doctor’s best attempt at empathy came when my child expressed that she was scared by what he was saying. His response? 'I’m scared for you.' This would have been a time to provide reassurance and hope—something any professional should offer in such a moment—not to admit fear, especially in front of a vulnerable child. It was an incredibly unprofessional and damaging response at a time when my child needed comfort. No child or family should have to go through what we did.
