I’m writing today to let you know how very disappointed and upset I was when my husband and I had a consultation with Dr. “Z” regarding his diagnosis of small cell lung cancer. Unfortunately, patients come to accept that many doctors have been labeled for not having a good bedside manner. Beyond that, Dr. “Z” lacked the ability to convey any level of genuine concern or empathy when he met with us. He started by asking if we had seen the scans, which we hadn’t. He brought the scan up on the computer and proceeded to circle all the cancerous spots stating “this is cancer, this is cancer, etc”. We didn’t even know what we were looking at. He then said he couldn’t do radiation as it would destroy his lungs. We sat there feeling hopeless. We have found a wonderful, caring team of doctors through Northwestern and are feeling encouraged and hopeful. There is no guarantee but there is hope. A diagnosis of cancer is hard enough but to have a doctor so lacking in caring is terrible
