Laissez-faire and Cavalier
Dr. Alan Sanders sees people while they're hospitalized at Albany Medical Center in Albany NY & provides follow up care upon discharge. However, he only schedules follow up appointments on Tuesdays, making it impossible to be seen within 2 weeks as directed. In the month between discharge & follow up, at least 3 blood work orders were written, drawn, & analysed, yet no one at his office followed up to get results. Meanwhile, a staph infection in my knee progressed to full body sepsis, then to bone in my thoracic spine. Interoffice communication & patient follow up were poor. I had to call Dr Sanders' office 3-5 times a day for 2-3 days in a row each time I needed help. Notes posted in my online record in MyChart did not reflect what had happened during visits. A 3+ paragraph summary dictated by Sanders at the end of a visit was reduced to a single incorrect sentence, making follow up care by a covering MD a nightmare. Working this hard for adequate care takes energy away from healing.

After whipple surgery my liver was severely damaged and Dr Sanders was assigned to deal with recurring infections. This lasted 1.5 years with Dr Sanders arguing that I had a structural issue causing the repeated infections. The surgeon said no structural issues. They battled it out until Dr Sanders won and I was sent to Columbia Presbyterian for whipple resection. If he hadn’t battled for me I would not be able to write this today. I owe him my life.
