Don't Expect Compassion or an Accurate Diagnosis
Not only was my assessment unhelpful; it was harmful. The clinician I saw was so unsure of his conclusions, he said he was leaning one way on a diagnosis, but a conversation w my regular therapist could 'tip' him the other way. This upset me, so he asked why I cared so much about a 'label.' Because I need treatment?! I express myself better in writing, so I tried to explain myself in an email, which he referenced in his report & insinuated it was negative behavior. He did speak to my therapist in a conversation she described as circular & unproductive. I ultimately got a 2nd opinion & started treatment that has begun to relieve suffering I've endured my whole life--relief he'd have deprived me of because, as with so many other things he got wrong, he misjudged me advocating for myself by writing an email as me panicking 'at the possibility of not receiving the expected diagnosis.' A clinician should care enough about patients' pain to admit when they missed the mark. He did not.
