Damaging Discharge
My therapist was helpful up until the last couple of months; however, I was discharged without warning. I was with this therapist for a while and one day out of the blue they discharged me; the reasons were bogus. Therapists should “do no harm”, but being let go without warning that day brought back severe trauma surrounding abandonment; which was one of the main reasons I was in therapy. Since then, I fear abandonment from others, so I have kept to myself. They do not accept insurance; I paid a lot each week. I was also charged for the discharge session (they shouldn't have- it was damaging). Discharging a client should be discussed; a plan should be made over a few sessions unless safety was a concern. I was told in CBT, I could discuss what I needed to, which was agreed on. I did not meet the criteria for discharge and when I asked for clarification, they got defensive and said it was their final decision. I feel more traumatized now than when I first began. I wish I never went.
