"It is so important to me to remember why I chose this career path during that summer in Honduras. Irene Lewnard, MD was first inspired to become a physician by her grandfather who started his medical career as a family physician and later trained as an anesthesiologist, and her aunt who is a pathologist. She says they both believed strongly in serving their communities. Dr. Lewnard was inspired to go into the OB/GYN specialty by a mentor during medical school who had great compassion and skill in caring for her patients. "I enjoy the relationships OB/GYNs develop with women at all stages of life, from adolescence through menopause," says Dr. Lewnard. "It is a privilege to participate in both joyful and challenging moments in their lives.
