He remained at Duke University where he completed his entire surgical training including residencies in both general and cardiothoracic surgery as well as a research fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery. Upon completion of his training in 1998 he went into private practice in Greensboro, North Carolina where he practiced until 2022.
