Biography: Dr. Sonek earned his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Chicago and completed both his residency and his Maternal-Fetal Medicine fellowship at the Ohio State University. He serves on the clinical faculty at both Ohio State and Wright State University. Dr. Sonek's special interest and calling is diagnostic ultrasound. He earned his RDMS (Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer) in Obstetric, Gynecologic and Neuro Sonography. A part of his fellowship was spent at the Harris Birthright Centre for Fetal Medicine in London, UK, where he received advanced training in prenatal diagnosis and treatment under the tutelage of Professor Kypros Nicolaides. The relationship he developed there helped him prove a finding involving Down syndrome for which he gained international recognition. He linked absence of severely reduced development of the fetal nasal bones with Down syndrome between 11 to 13 weeks gestation. Dr. Sonek once again gained worldwide recognition for developing a new first trimester marker called the Fronto-Maxillary Facial Angle. This technique measures the angle of the fetus' face in the first trimester and provides a risk assessment as to whether the fetus may have Down syndrome. Dr. Sonek is a member of a number of national and international societies in OB/GYN, Maternal-Fetal Medicine and ultrasonography. He is also President and Chairman of the Board for the Fetal Medicine Foundation USA. A non-profit charitable organization which began in July 2006 it is the global leader in First Trimester training and accreditation. The foundation works very closely with the original Fetal Medicine Foundation in London founded by Kypros Nicolaides. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine in the UK and an Honorary Member of the OB/GYN Society in the Czech Republic. A national prize for outstanding work in diagnostic ultrasound and genetics is awarded in Dr. Sonek's name on an annual basis in the Czech Republic. Along with maintaining a very busy private practice in Maternal-Fetal Medicine, he is also involved in resident education and national and international courses in ultrasonography.
